This dissertation examines three science fiction films -Blade Runner (1982, Ridley Scott), Ghost in the Shell (1995, Mamoru Oshii) and District 9 (2009, Neill Blomkamp)- based on the cities of Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Johannesburg. By using theories of Henri Lefebvre's The Right to the City (1968), Michael Foucault's Panopticon (1975) and Biopolitics (1976), Donna Haraway's Cyborg Theory (1985) and Homi K. Bhabha's Stereotype and Hybridity (1994) as a conceptual framework, this dissertation investigates how future cities are constructed by their various actors from the bottom to the top. To this aim, spatial segregation, power and surveillance dynamics, gender and power relations, immigrants, stereotypes and 'the other' are linked to films and analyzed in depth. The dissertation categorizes immigrants, refugees, hybrids, foreigners, replicants, cyborgs and aliens as 'the other' and shows spatial and social inequalities in the cities in which they live. This dissertation aims to show the extent to which science fiction has come of age and what genre has contributed to cultural studies and, in particular, to efforts to read the city of the future. It argues that the apartheid and post-apartheid reality mirrors the film District 9 with its urban setting and characters, and the representation of 'the 'other' in the same film is also evident in Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell. The question of what it means to be a citizen or a non-citizen in Blade Runner and District 9 is another theme that is examined in the two films in particular. Identity, gender and class issues as well as the rules of panoptic cities as in Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell are also discussed.
