The escalating demand for economical launch solutions catering to small satellite payloads has intensified the exploration of low-cost rocket development. Within this context, hybrid rocket technology has emerged as a promising and cost-effective solution, demonstrating the potential to meet the evolving needs of the space industry. Renowned for their enhanced safety and reliability attributes, hybrid rocket engines present a compelling alternative to traditional bi-liquid propulsion systems, particularly due to their favorable impact on both development and production expenses. This study endeavors to delve into the intricate dynamics of a nozzle operating in a small-scale hybrid rocket engine designed to operate in an oxygen-rich environment under varying thermal and mechanical stresses. The overarching objective is to comprehensively understand the behavior of the nozzle in such conditions, with a specific focus on cost-effectiveness and practicality. To achieve this ambitious goal, a meticulously crafted small-scale hybrid rocket engine has been designed, developed, and subjected to a series of rigorous tests, integrating theoretical analysis, numerical simulations, and experimental testing methodologies. The investigation into the thermal boundary conditions of the hybrid rocket nozzle involves a sophisticated combination of theoretical analysis, numerical simulations using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods, and experimental validation through testing on an actual gas-oxygen-paraffin-based hybrid rocket motor. The comprehensive three-dimensional analysis of internal fluxes within Ansys Fluent incorporates the Eddy Dissipation Model (EDM) to simulate reacting species transport under a specifically defined reaction regime. Furthermore, the numerical models developed for this study consider both solid and fluid regions, providing a holistic understanding of the fluid field and wall temperature distribution. This innovative approach involves a collaborative interaction between solid and fluid regions, each contributing essential boundary conditions for the other, resulting in a well-rounded solution to the coupled problem. Theoretical aspects of the study employ the conjugate gradient method along with an iterative technique for function estimation to address the Inverse Heat Conduction Problem (IHCP). This analytical approach aims to estimate heat flux and internal wall temperature of the nozzle, providing critical insights into its performance under varying conditions. Additionally, the determination of the convective heat transfer coefficient through the Bartz equation enhances the accuracy of the overall analysis. By adopting this multifaceted and comprehensive approach, the study not only seeks to unravel the complexities of the hybrid rocket nozzle's behavior but also aims to contribute to the optimization of its performance across a spectrum of operating conditions. This research holds significance not only for its technical insights but al for its potential impact on the future development of low-cost and efficient small-scale satellite launch capabilities.
