Özet
Sustainable solutions for societal challenges are increasingly being sought after in an uncertain and rapidly changing environment. As social enterprises combine financial sustainability with social value creation at their core, resilience of these enterprises presents itself as a timely area of study. This thesis aims to understand organizational resilience in the context of social enterprises, and consequently the goal is to present a framework of factors that would support social enterprises in strengthening their resilience. Through strengthened resilience, the enterprises can successfully continue creating social value while staying financially profitable even in a tension-filled operating environment. The literature review presented in the study encompasses the development of organizational resilience research and a definitional discussion on the concept. Social entrepreneurship literature is reviewed, with a focus on assessing the danger of mission drift. The synthesis of the literature streams suggests that resilience and social entrepreneurship share several similar features. A theoretical framework is developed in order to guide the empirical research, which is conducted as a qualitative multiple case study research on social enterprises based in Helsinki. The cases are first analyzed individually, and then examined together in a cross-case comparison. The findings suggest that enhanced measuring practices for verifying the social impact created, a strong ideological identity around the social mission, networking for resource acquisition, creative and adaptable organizing, opportunity-orientation and having systemic change as the larger vision, all contribute to strengthening the resilience of a social enterprise. A positive feedback loop is recognized, as managing dual goals already requires a level of resilience, pushing the enterprise to resilience-seeking behaviors, and the enhanced resilience on its turn contributes to the successful management of both financial and social sides of the business. A modified theoretical framework is presented based on the findings. As research combining resilience and social enterprises is rather new, this exploratory study provides a stepping stone for future research, including studying social enterprise resilience in comparison to commercial enterprises operating in the same field, or looking deeper into a specific resilience factor. The results of the study support managers and owners of social enterprises in understanding, what areas in their business to strategically assess more closely, and what kind of practices and principles to start or continue applying to further develop organizational resilience. Moreover, as interplay with the environment is crucial in resilience, the legitimacy of social enterprises in the society will be further strengthened.
