Özet
By the beginning of the twentieth century a set of changes in political, technological and social foundations paved the way for the literature to renew itself through the hands of a group of writers who were disillusioned by the First World War and left all their old values and even homes behind. Gertrude Stein was the first member of this group who left America and settled in Paris. Her salon was a place to host expatriate writers and artists where they could be inspired by each other's revolutionary ideas and works. The Great War was the turning point in the process of their disillusionment and shattered their old beliefs and left them with alcohol and chasing wealth to forget about the absurdity they felt by the possibility of being alone on a planet with no spiritual power to help them. Among American writers who chose Paris as their new home to produce their works Fitzgerald, Hemingway and Eliot are the pioneers of this movement who gave the Lost Generation its fame and reflected the mood of this era in the best possible way. Different attitudes towards the same major events and changes in the new century highlighted these causes of lostness differently for each writer. Fitzgerald's novels portrayed characters longing for wealth and external beauty while Hemingway's characters were mostly wounded by the war and steeped in drinking and physical passion to forget their loss. Eliot's poetry also reflected distressed characters who lived and loved like machines in the wasteland of post war years. This study aims at evaluation of the features of this group of writers and the overall dominant atmosphere in that specific time in the generation that have already experienced war. This study also tries to clarify the different attitudes of the major writers of the Lost Generation in their choosing of subject, style and tone for writing their works which made them exclusive in the first decades of the twentieth century. In order to be more specific the researcher will concentrate on three well known writers of the company Ernest Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald and T.S. Eliot.
