ABSTRACT This research consists of two main parts. Part onefocuses on the behaviour of the banks. Part two examining banking market structure and attempts determine the relationship between banking sector variables and macroeconomic variable, namely per capita income. The study employs many empirical research and econometric techniques to reach its goals and to evaluate the empirical findings. In part one, SCP and NEIO methods of industrial organization theory are employed to test the market structure. The findings confirm the efficient market hypothesis, because they do not reveal oligopolistic or monopolistic behaviour of the existing banks in the sector. (Although system reflects oligopolistic strcture with rspect to 4 and 8 banks concentration). Empirical findings also show that, NEIO hypothesis is a better measure than the classical SCP hypothesis for the study. The findings second parts which tries to elaborate the interactions between economy and the banking sector, support the idea that, macroeconomy (economy) affect the banking system. In other words, our findings state that the direction of causality is from the economy to the banking sector. İİİ : ' ?--,':???$
