Prof. Dr. Mehmet Okyayuz Eylül 1999, 129 sayfa Bu tez radikal demokrasi projesini, Ernesto Laclau ve Chantal Mouffe'un yaklaşımları ile bu yaklaşıma en önemli karşı çıkış olan Ellen Meiksins Wood'un çalışması çerçevesinde değerlendirmek ve bu projenin sol politka açısından uygulanabilir bir teorik ve politik yönelimi temsil edip etmediğini sorgulamak amacındadır. Laclau ve Mouffe radikal demokrasi projesini oluştururlarken Marksist analizdeki işçi sınıfının ayrıcalıklı rolü argümanına karşı pek çok argüman geliştirler ve işçi sınıfı çerçevesinde oluşturulacak bir harekete şüpheyle bakarlar. Bu nedenle radikal demokrasi projesiyle birlikte Marksizmin krizinin aslında sınıf politikasının krizi olduğu iddia edilmeye başlandı; ve sınıf politikasının krizi söylemi kutupsal tepkiler üretti. Kutuplardan biri Marksizmin sınıf ve sınıflara ilişkin tezlerini tamamen terkederken, diğer kutup ise klasik sınıf politikasının devamı doğrultusunda düşünceler üretti. Bu çalışma, bu iki yaklaşımın da sosyalizm üzerine yeniden düşünmek ve sosyalizmi yeniden tarif etmek noktasında doğru yaklaşımlar olmadığı;. doğru olan yolun bu iki kutupsalanlayışın ötesinde bir teorik yaklaşım, üçüncü bir yol, geliştirmek olduğu iddiasındadır

ABSTRACT QUESTIONING RADICAL DEMOCRACY: CLASS POLITICS, IDENTITY POLITICS AND THE POSSIBILITY OF SOCIALIST PRACTICE Gültekin, Murat M. Sc, Department of Political Science and Public Administration Supervisor: Assist. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Okyayuz September 1999, 138 pages This thesis aims to assess the project of radical democracy within the framework of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe's theoretical approach and Ellen Meiksins Wood's work as a vigorous refusal of this approach; and, then, question whether it represents a viable theoretical and political direction for leftist politics.The study argues that in constituting their project of radical democracy, Laclau and Mouffe propose so many arguments against the privileged role of working class in Marxist analysis and they are skeptical about a movement that is organized around working-class. Because of this reason, with their project of radical democracy, it began to be argued that the crisis of Marxism is in fact, the crisis of 'class polities'. And, it has produced polar reactions. One of these poles believes that the theoretical argumentation of Marxism about social class (es) has been given up. The other one is related to a reaffirmation of classical class politics. The main conclusion of this study is that these polar reactions are not a mtrue path in order to reach correct theoretical results about any process of rethinking and reformulation of socialism. The real way is to develop a theoretical approach (a middle way) out of these polar reactions
