Özet

Antik Çağ'dan günümüze kadar son derece büyük bir öneme sahip olan Kocaeli, güneyde Yalova ve Bursa, batıda İstanbul, doğuda ise Sakarya illeri ile komşudur. Kocaeli ve çevresi stratejik olarak büyük bir önem teşkil etmesine rağmen bölgede yer alan kale yapıları ile ilgili yapılan çalışmalar oldukça kısıtlı kalmıştır. Bu çalışmada Kocaeli ve çevresinde tespit edilen ve çoğunluğu MS 12-13. yüzyıllara tarihlendirilen kale yapılarının mimari özellikleri, stratejik konumları, hangi amaca yönelik hizmet ettikleri, birbirleri ile olan ilişkileri, malzeme-teknik açısından benzerlik ve farklılıkları değerlendirilirken, bölgede yer alan kale yapılarının önemi tarihsel ve siyasal olaylar bağlamında ele alınarak tartışılmıştır. Bölgede coğrafi özellikler göz önünde bulundurularak başta savunma bağlamında olmak üzere çeşitli amaçlar doğrultusunda inşa edilen kaleler, bölgeye önemli ölçüde avantaj sağlamaktadır. Bölgenin özellikle MS 10. yüzyıllardan itibaren Bizans dünyası için önemli bir merkez haline gelmiş olması nedeniyle burada yer alan kale yapılarının oldukça özenli bir şekilde inşa edildiklerini, körfeze ve başkentte olan konumlarından dolayı her zaman ön planda oldukları anlaşılmaktadır.

Kocaeli has been extremely important from antiquity to the present, neighbouring the provinces of Yalova and Bursa to the south, Istanbul to the west and Sakarya to the east. Although Kocaeli and its surroundings are of great strategic importance, there are only limited studies of the fortifications in the area. The present thesis examines the defensive structures in and around Kocaeli, most of which date between the 12th and 13th centuries AD. It evaluates their architectural features, strategic locations, the purposes they were intended to serve, relationships with each other, and the similarities and differences between fortifications in terms of materials and techniques. Also, the thesis considers the importance of the castle structures located in the region against the background of historical and political events. Castles, which were built mindful of the geographical features of the region, were supposed to serve various purposes, especially defence, and this lent a significant advantage to the region. Especially from the 10th century AD onwards, the Kocaeli region becomes an important centre for the Byzantine world. Because of this, the castle structures located here were built with great care, and their locations close to the Gulf and the Capital ensured that they preserved their prominent status.
