ABSTRACT Demirer, Mm alla, Noah's History in Tlte Old Testament and Qur'an, M.A., Supervised by Doç. Dr. Mehmet Paçacı, 114 pages. Nuh or Noah is a particularly important figure both in the Old Testament and in the Qur'an. According to the Old Testament and to the Qur'an, Nuh is the first prophet of punishment, who is followed by Hud, Salih, Şuayb and Musa. For the Old Testament, Noah alone of his contemporaries was“righteous and blameles”. Tliat is why he and his family alone were to be saved in the catostropic flood which God was to bring upon the world.Accord.ing to the Qur'an also, he is“the perspicuous admonisher ”(nezirun mubin),“the true messanger of God”(resul emin),“the grateful servant of God”(abd sakur) whom God enters in to a covenant with. He is send by God to his people; but he is denied by his people. Therefore God decided to perish his people while saving Nuh and those who believed in him. Our study which is entitled as“Noah's History in The Old Testament and Qur'an”is composed of two main parties and one conclusion, in addition to the introduction. In the introduction, we have explained the importance of our study and the method applied in it In the first party, we have just tranmitted the texts of old and those of the Qur'an concerning Noah story without giving any explanation, according to our method In the second party, we have dealt with with the texts of the Old Testament from critical points of vieuw. In the texts of the Old Testament concerning the story of the flood, we found two different sources. The one is the Jahwist account and other Priestly. Then, we have compared the the story of the flood with Sumerian and Babylonian mythological accounts., Indeed,Noah in the biblical account closely parallels Ziusudra in Sumerian and Utnapistim in the Babylonian. The general outline of the stories is the same: the building of the ship, the realease of the birds, and the sacrifices made by the hero after safe landing. Finally, we have studied Noah story from psyco-sociological points of view and have shown thus that the Qur'an established one of the most importants principles of the modern sociology according to which the human consience is determined by the social structure, many centures agojn th end of our study, we have arrived at this conclusion that, the Noah story in the Old Testament and in the Qur'an is, in many respects, similar to each other.
