Students' views on and satisfaction with English-medium instruction in a Turkish setting: A case study

Özet
Son yıllarda yüksek öğretim kurumlarında uluslararasılaşmanın etkisi ile hem ülkemizde hem de dünya genelinde birçok üniversitede öğretim dili İngilizce olan bölümlerin sayısında ciddi bir artış olmuştur. Öğrencilerin bu bölümleri tercih etme sebepleri, öğrenim sürecinde yaşadıkları zorluklar ve bu zorluklarla başa çıkma yöntemleri araştırmacıların ilgisini çeken başlıklar arasındadır. Bunlara ek olarak öğrencilerin memnuniyet düzeyleri de hala araştırmaya açık bir konudur. Bu motivasyonlardan hareketle oluşturulan bu çalışma, Türkiye'de bulunan bir vakıf üniversitesinde öğrencilerin, öğretim dili İngilizce olan programlara dair görüşlerini ve bu programlara dair memnuniyet düzeylerini araştırmayı hedeflemiştir. Çalışmanın nicel verisi 226 öğrencinin katıldığı bir anket ile toplanmıştır. Nitel veri için ise 23 öğrenci ile kısa mülakatlar yapılmıştır. Data analizi için SPSS 29.0 ve NVivo 12 programları kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuçları öğrencilerin genel memnuniyet düzeylerinin yüksek olduğunu göstermektedir. Öğrencilerin öğretim dili İngilizce olan bölümlerin en büyük avantajlarını dil gelişimlerini olumlu düzeyde etkilemesi, kariyer gelişimlerine katkıda bulunması, daha iyi iş imkanlarına olanak sağlaması ve güncel ve geniş çerçevede kaynaklara erişimi kolaylaştırması olarak gördüğü gözlemlenmiştir. Yaşadıkları zorluklar dersleri derinlemesine anlamalarının mümkün olmaması, öğretim elemanlarının kullandığı dilin her zaman seviyelerine uygun olmaması, alanlarına özel terminoloji bilgilerinin yeterli olmaması ve ana dillerinde verilen eğitime kıyasla daha fazla zaman ders çalışmayı gerektirmesi olarak not edilmiştir. Öğrenciler tarafından en çok benimsenen stratejinin ise ders esnasında öğretmenlerinden destek istemek olduğu görülmüştür.

Together with the internationalization of higher education, there has been a significant increase in the number of departments whose medium of instruction is English in many universities both in Turkey and around the world. The reasons why students prefer these departments, the difficulties they experience in the learning process, and the strategies they employ to cope with these challenges are among the topics that attract the attention of researchers. In addition to these, the satisfaction level of the students is still a subject that is open to research. Motivated by the available research works in the field, this study aimed to investigate the opinions of students about English-medium programs and their satisfaction levels at a foundation university in Turkey. A mixed-method approach was adopted in the study. The quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire participated by 226 students. For the qualitative part, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 23 students. For analyses, SPSS 29.0 and NVivo 12 programs were utilized. The findings showed that students had a high satisfaction level with EMI. As the greatest advantages of EMI, students highlighted that it had a positive impact on their language development, was beneficial for their career, would facilitate better job opportunities, and would make it easier for them to access the most up-to-date and wide-ranging resources. The difficulties they experienced were noted as not being able to get a full comprehension of the content, lecturers' imbalanced language proficiency levels, the lack of sufficient knowledge of terminology specific to their field, and the need to put more time into self-study compared to Turkish-medium instruction. It was also observed that the most favorable strategy for the students was to ask their lecturers for support in class.
