Özet

Bu tez Ahmad Masoud'un Vanished: The Mysterious Disappearance of Mustafa Ouda (2015) ve Susan Abulhawa'nın Mornings in Jenin (2010) adlı romanlarını incelenmektedir. Bu iki roman, Travma teorisi ve Barbara Harlow'un Direniş Edebiyatı teorisi önerisi çerçevesinde okunmuştur. Bu tezin odak noktası, 1948'de başlayan çatışmanın Filistinli kurbanlarının travmalarının İngiliz romanlarında nasıl temsil edildiği ve farklı temsil biçimlerinin bellek ve kimlik sorunlarını nasıl ele aldığıdır. Romanlarda sergilenen farklı direniş ve dayanıklılık biçimleri, Travma ve Direniş Edebiyatı'nın teorik arka planında incelenmektedir. Bu tez, romanlarda tasvir edilen travmanın, Filistinli mağdur için hala devam eden bir süreç olması nedeniyle, mağdurun travmadan tamamen kurtulma şansı olmadığını savunmaktadır. Ancak, mağdurun hikayesini anlatarak ya da yazarak paylaşmak, travma ve iyileşme üzerine araştırma yapanlar tarafından büyük önem atfedilen diğer kişilerle bağlantı kurma yollarından olarak, travmatize olmuş karakterlerin travmalarıyla nispeten başa çıkmalarını sağlar. Bu romanlar travma deneyimlerini dile getirdikleri için, travma mağdurlarının sadece dünya geneli ile değil, kendi deneyimleriyle de bağlantı kurmalarını sağlar. Travma kurgusu, travmaya tanıklık eden travmatize olmamış okurla da bir bağ kurar. Bu bağlamda incelendiğinde, bu romanlar, travma devam etmekte ve dolayısıyla hiçbir zaman tamamen atlatılamayacak olsa da yine de travmaların başarılı bir şekilde atlatıldığı örnekleri sergilemekte ve böylece dayanıklılık duygusunu desteklemektedir.

This thesis analyzes Ahmad Masoud's Vanished: The Mysterious Disappearance of Mustafa Ouda (2015), and Susan Abulhawa's Mornings in Jenin (2010). The two novels are read within the framework of Trauma theory and Barbara Harlow's proposal of Resistance Literature theory. The focus of this thesis is how trauma of Palestinian victims of the conflict that started in 1948 is represented in English novels, and how different modes of representation address questions of memory and identity. The different modes of resistance and resilience demonstrated in the novels are explored against the theoretical background of Trauma and Resistance Literature. This thesis argues that because the trauma depicted in the novels is still an ongoing process in the case of the Palestinian victim, there is no chance for complete recovery from trauma. However, sharing the victim's story through telling or writing enables the traumatized characters to relatively work through their trauma, as they are ways of connecting with others, an aspect deemed of high significance by those who undertake research on trauma and healing. Because these novels give voice to experiences of trauma, they provide trauma survivors with a sense of connection not only with the world at large, but also with their own experiences. Trauma fiction also creates a bond with the non-traumatized reader who acts as a witness to the trauma. Viewed in this context, these novels, even though the trauma is ongoing and hence, and can never be wholly recovered from, still exemplify instances of a successful working through and thus support a sense of resilience.
