Özet

Communication has changed through the history and the inventions of the internet accelerated the change of the concept of communication (Eastman, 2013). Following the invention of Web 2.0, social media websites came into use. Thus, Web 2.0 made the internet users enable to contribute or create the content through social media websites (Hubpages, 2009); in other words one-centred replaced a concept in which each user is a content creator. In 2010, social movements erupted in Tunisia and these protests spread to other Arabic spoken countries and 12 countries (Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Algeria, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait) have been affected in some way from these protests (BBC, n.d.). Even though social media became popular before these protests, the role of social media on social movements started to be discussed in the literature following these protests. There are two different views regarding the role of social media on the Arab Spring some of the scholar claim that social media played crucial role during these protests (Harb, 2011); while some of the scholars state that the role of social media was minimal in these protests (Comninos, 2011). Tunisia and Egypt have been chosen as case countries in this study and this study reveals with the statistics for what kind of purposes the protesters used social media during the Arab Spring protests in Tunisia and Egypt.
