ABSTRACT In this study, the population status and bio-ecology of C.mydas nesting on Kazanh (1993 and 1994), Mersin and Samandağ (1994), Hatay Beaches were examined. Furthermore, nesting behaviour, number of eggs and hatclings and harmful effects on them were established. The dense nesting of Chelonia mydas was proved on both beaches. A total of 481 emergences were recorded with 124 (25.62 %) resulted in nest building on Kazanlı Beach during 1993 breeding season. Of these nests, 176 produced hatchlings. The number of total emergences was 540 with 216 (40 %) resulted in nests in 1994 breeding season. Of these nests, 230 produced hatchlings. On the other hand, 366 emergences were recorded with 126 (34.43 %) resulted in nests on Samandağ Beach in 1994. Of the nests, 137 produced hatchlings. The mean straight carapace length was measured as 84.6 cm on Kazanlı Beach in 1993, whereas it was 87.4 cm in 1994. The mean straight carapace length was recorded as 87.2 cm on Samandağ Beach in 1994. A total of 105 females were tagged on Kazanlı Beach and 16 females on Samandağ Beach. The mean number of eggs in a clutch was 1 12 on Kazanlı Beach and 122 on Samandağ Beach. The mean incubation period was recorded as 58.3 and 59.9 days on Kazanlı Beach and 59.9 days on Samandağ Beach. The mean straight carapace length of hatchlings were recorded as 4.65 cm on Kazanlı Beach and 4.64 cm on Samandağ Beach.The nests were concentrated between 5-20 m distance from the sea on Kazanli and Samandağ Beaches. This study proved that the green turtles mostly prefered slope of dunes for nesting. Accordingly, the nests were dense on Kazanlı 3 subsection and Samandağ 2 subsection on which the sand dunes situated. ' The factors effecting the adult females, hatchlings and eggs were determined and recommendations were made to prevent or decrease the above mentioned negative factors.
