This Final Masters Project treats to show the results of the research about“arabesk”, a Turkish and urban subculture, and its use as a theme in the Turkish contemporary art parting from 1980 through the representation of its material culture. The study is developed as an investigation in arts, rather than a sociological one; and has the objective to show and analize the effects that this subculture has in the discourses of the selected Turkish artists and their artistic productions. In particular, we inquire what is arabesk, what similarities does it have with the kitsch, what relations does it have with the internal inmigration in Turkey, the conurbation, the consumption and the global culture, and how does it affect the state of women in the Turkish society. These are the questions that conform the bodies of the chapters, and are developed through the analysis of the artistic propositions and daily life objects, which are defined as arabesk. Within the Final Masters Project, we support the discourse with the own artistic productions of the author and some comparisons with artworks previous to the selected initiating date.
