Contra-rotating propulsion (CRP) systems are used in various ship types and underwater warfare systems (torpedo, submarine, etc.), specifically. The forward and aft propellers rotate in opposite directions on individual shafts running along the same axis. The rotational energy loss of the forward propeller is considerably recovered to the propulsion system by the aft propeller. The overall propulsion efficiency (ηD) increase compared to the conventional type single propeller propulsion systems up to 10-15%. The CRP systems have a balanced torque distribution between the forward and aft propellers and a regular pressure gradient in the wake region, contributing to steering and manoeuvrability. The swirl motion of underwater warfare systems (torpedo) is prevented. The design and performance details of the CRP systems rarely exist in the literature since their commercial confidentiality. The effect of the interaction between the forward and aft propellers on the noise spectrum for different flow conditions was investigated in the behind ship condition using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods. The effect of the interaction was discussed considering the cavitation patterns on the suction and pressure sides of the propellers and the turbulence characteristics in the flow domain. The torque balance (ΔQ), ηD, cavitation patterns, turbulence characteristics and noise spectrum calculated for different rotation rates at the propulsion point were compared among themselves and with the conventional propulsion system. The classical Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) and Scale-Adaptive Simulation (SAS) methods were used with the SST (Shear Stress Transport) k-ω turbulence model. The SAS method is developed from the classical URANS model, noting that the way that turbulence is incorporated is mathematically equivalent between the RANS approach and the subgrid-scale model used for Large Eddy Simulation. The difference of the SST-SAS by the classical SST-URANS model is a term (QSAS) added to the turbulent eddy frequency (ω). Multi-phase flow; the volume of fluid (VOF) method and cavitation formation was calculated using the Schnerr-Sauer model, which uses a simplified form of Rayleigh-Plesset equation and the inertia controlled growth model for bubble formation. A homogeneous mixture approach, which is based on the presence of seeds and their subsequent growth and collapse as bubbles was used to model the two-phase cavitating flow. In the incompressible flow, the divergence of the velocity is zero. However, noteworthy in cavitating flow, cavity evaporation and condensation cause a volume dilation. Thus, the divergence of the mixture velocity does not vanish. The phases were assumed to be well mixed moving at the same velocity, same pressure and to be in local thermodynamic equilibrium by sharing the same temperature. The Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings (FW-H) equation, derived from continuity and Navier-Stokes equations and expressed as an inhomogeneous wave equation, were used for noise estimations. The sliding mesh technique was applied to simulate the rotation of both single propeller and contra-rotating propulsion systems. Initially, a particular mesh refinement was adopted on the regions where cavitation development was expected. The conventional type King's College (KCD) KCD 193 propeller model was used to validate the propeller open water characteristics, cavitation pattern and noise spectrum. Propeller model tests were conducted in the Newcastle University, Emerson Cavitation Tunnel (ECT). The cavitation experiments should always be performed under certain water quality conditions. The water quality of the ECT is monitored throughout all cavitation tests as it has a significant impact on the measurements. ECT has a dedicated water quality monitoring system and degassing system to keep the oxygen saturation level of the tunnel at desired level. David Taylor Model Basin (DTMB) DTMB 3686-87A propeller models were used to validate the propeller open water characteristics of the CRP systems. A Capesize bulk carrier type, Japan Bulk Carrier (JBC) ship model, that geometrical features and model test results can be accessed in the literature, was used to validate the ship model resistance, nominal wake and self-propulsion coefficients. The JBC ship was designed by NMRI (National Maritime Research Institute), University of Yokohoma and SRC (Ship Building Research Centre) as part of research activities in an industry program including the Class NK. The least-squares root (LSR) method was used for the uncertainty analysis in CFD verification and validation methodology and procedures. In the verification and validation analysis of the CRP systems, several turbulence models, algorithms and pressure-velocity discretization schemes were compared in terms of their effects on modelling of turbulent scales, accuracy and cost of computations. A hybrid multi-criterion decision-making method (MCDM), which is a combination of analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), was used in comparative studies. A contra-rotating propeller was designed considering the performance requirements of the JBC ship at the propulsion point. The CRP system design software used in the study was developed by Sasaki et al. (1998) and revised by Sumitomo Heavy Industries. A systematic investigation was carried out for 81 individual cases, regarding the effects of the axial distance (X/DFP), load distribution (LFP:LAP), blade number configuration (ZFP:ZAP) and rotational ratio (nFP:nAP) criteria between the forward and aft propellers on the propeller open water efficiency and torque balance at the propulsion point. Several rotational rates have been calculated at the propulsion point to examine the effects of the interaction between the forward and aft propellers on the cavitation pattern, turbulence characteristics and noise spectrum. The first cell height (y) and the number of layers in the boundary layer were calculated by distance from the wall (y+) in the mesh topology. The y+ values on the propeller obtained close to each other for different grid densities. If the y+≤5, the solution is in linear sub-region, whereas if 5<y+<30, it is in buffer region. It is known that; the URANS turbulence models are inappropriate in the buffer region. Therefore, the y+ values were acquired sufficiently low and tried to be kept in linear sub-region in the simulations. In general, aspect ratio (AR<100) and skewness (ψ<0.9) criteria were provided in the flow domain. The propulsion coefficients were extrapolated to the full-scale using the 1978 ITTC method. The advance coefficients (J) and cavitation number (σ) variables used in cavitation investigations were determined, accordingly. An adaptive mesh refinement strategy was developed to simulate the development of tip-vortex cavitation. As the mesh size was improved in computational studies, the time-step was decreased as well, depending on the Courant number (CFL) criterion (CMAX<1). Time-step is one of the most critical parameters in terms of the numerical stability of the analysis. The physical time step for the propeller was calculated by the formula recommended by ITTC. The generated mesh on the propeller and the assigned time-step value is based on the CFL criterion to ensure numerical stability in the simulations. The mesh, especially on the blade tip region, is regenerated to prevent the dramatic decrease of assigned time-step value. The courant number is calculated by dividing the product of flow velocity and physical time step by the mesh cell dimension. In the CRP systems, unlike single propeller propulsion systems, if the forward and aft propellers revolutions are different, a phase difference occurs between the propellers depending on the constant time-step defined in the computational studies. A phase averaging approach has been developed to accurately investigate the CRP systems among themselves and with the single propeller propulsion system in terms of cavitation and turbulence characteristics. The cavitation patterns obtained for different rotation ratios were compared. In addition, turbulent kinetic Energy (k), vorticity (Ω) and turbulence length scale (l) variables were explored at various planes defined in the flow domain. In the noise spectrum analyses, dimensions of the cells in the flow domain were determined considering the wavelength (λ), cut-off frequency (FMC) and smallest turbulence size approaches. A porous data surface (PDS), which was defined as an interface in the flow domain, was identified as a noise source in the analyses. Thus, the effects of turbulent eddies in the slipstream were also included in the simulations.
