Özet
Bu tez, Robert Louis Stevenson'ın Dr. Jekyll ve Bay Hyde'ın Garip Vakası ve Oscar Wilde'ın Dorian Gray'in Portresi'ni analizleyip, Geç Viktorya dönemi estetik ifadeleri ile ilişkilendirir. Fin de siècle, gotik türün ve onun grotesk imgeleminin yeniden canlanmasına ve bu tarihsel bağlamdaki kültürel ihlaline karşılık gelen 'Kutsal Olmayan İfadeler' dönemi olarak betimlemekle başlar. Grotesk, transgresyon(ihlal) ve tabu kavramları tanımlandırılarak, Marksist bakış açısınca şekillendirilir. Ardından, romanları, çözülemez tarihsel ve toplumsal çelişkileri yerine getiren fanteziler olarak yorumlamak üzere, toplumun alegorik eylemleri olarak ele alır. Tez ilk olarak, Robert Louis Stevenson'ın Dr. Jekyll ve Bay Hyde'ın Garip Vakası'nı, toplumsal sınıf değişimlerinin metamorfozunu sunmak için, bilim ile yapılan büyülü iksir yoluyla dönemin endişelerini çözmeye yönelik bir alegori olarak yorumluyor. Ardından, Oscar Wilde'ın Dorian Gray'in Portresi'ni, aynı kaygılara sembolik bir tepki olarak, son dönemde kendi kendini yok eden bir zevke dalmış tüketim toplumunda ideal figürlerin resmini üreterek, geçici çözüm sunduğu belirtiliyor. Son olarak, tez, her iki romanın benzer sembolik çözünürlüğe sahip olmasıyla ilgili argümanın, alegorilerinin kültürel ihlallerinde küçük farklılıklar ile ifade edildiğine dair sonuç ve öneriler sunar ve daha sonra daha fazla araştırma için öneriler ve kaynaklar sunar.

The aim of this thesis is concerned with the late Victorian aesthetic expression through reading Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray. It starts with justifying the historical period of fin de siècle and labelling it as the period of the unholy expressions corresponding to the revival of the Gothic genre and its grotesque imagery, and its cultural transgression in that historical context. This is achieved by giving the definitions of the notions of grotesque, transgression, taboo. It then engages the novels through Marxist approach and renders them as socially allegorical acts which is to interpret them as fantasies that fulfill unresolvable historical and social contradictions. Firstly, it interprets Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as the allegory to resolve the anxieties of the period through a magical potion that is made from a hybrid of magic and science to present the metamorphosis of social class shifts. Next, it renders Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray as a symbolic response to the same anxieties with its temporary resolution through production of a picture of ideal celebrity figures in a consumer society that becomes immersed in a self-destructive pleasure in fin de siècle. Finally, the thesis presents conclusion and proposals that suggest the argument of relating both novels to have similar symbolic resolution expressed with slight differences in their cultural transgressions of their allegories, and then suggestions and resources are presented for further investigation and research.
