SUMMARY PROPAGATION IN A PLANE GRAVITATIONAL WAVE BACKGROUND In an interesting paper, Hogan constructed a solution of the vacuum Einstein- Maxwell field equations which is a simple example of a plane impulsive gravitational wave sharing its wave-front with an electromagnetic shock wave. Here the metric reads ds2 =2dUdV- 2 cos2 (aU+) dz + - i '-H(z)dz a v ' (1) where u* = ue(u) (2) for 0 being the Heavyside unit step function and V ; dz (3) for an arbitrary g. VIFor this solution all the components of y¥A, the Weyl tensor vanish expect for % = H(z)S(U) (4) and only one component of the Ricci tensor is not zero for U > 0. The metric is conformally flat for U > 0 and flat for U < 0. The history of the wave front is the null hyperplane U = 0. The metric is similar to the shock wave metric found by Nutku In this work, first we tried to calculate the vacuum fluctuations of a scalar field in the background of this new metric by taking the simplest possible form of g as g = az. (5) Our calculation is non perturbative. After we choose g = az, H(z) in the metric becomes a constant. H(z) = ^ = a v ; dz (6) Then the metric reads, for U > 0 ds2 =2dUdV-2\ ((*)'+(*)'). dzdz + sini 2 (2aU+) (7) VllWe will obtain Feynman Green's function, GF for a massless scaler particle in the background of the metric. to-“',[«*>,]G,(x,»')--«-V''-(*-*') (8) We go back to the real coordinates by using and we construct GF from the modes fx. The equation for fx is translational m. x,y and V. Therefore we make the ansatz fx = em^xe^g(U) (9) which yields the equation :-2atan(2flE/)- + 2 d + - £ Mm(2aU)-l) V }dV âUâV cos2{2aU)K V ; ; ax' \ / 4 /. /”rr\,\ d2 cos2 (2aU)K y ' ] dy1 ?fx=0 with the solution *?-*l kUkl (10) f, = ^ e*Ve*tXe*>re«a*42aU)e-ürH**>) (n) A cos,/2(2flt/) Green's function reads for U > 0, U' > 0 vmA2 = A2,= 7 r- + taa(2aU) + - -, r - tan(2aU') cos(2aU) v ; cos(2aU') v ' - ^ - r + tsm(2aU) ^ r- - tan(2aU') cos(2aU) v ; cos(2aU') v ' (12) (13) G(x,x') = - (14) In the second part of our work, we take the next simplest form of g as g = az (15) so H(z) becomes H(z) = ^-=:az V ; dz (16) Then the metric reads, for U > 0 ds2 =2dUdV-2 dzdz[cos2(aU+) + a2zzsm2{aU+)) + -sm(2aU+)L(dz)2 +z(dzfî\ ({1) Just note that for technical purposes we first do the calculation for the massive case. We derive the d'Alembertian operator. The operator Dx reads, for U>0 IX2a cos(at/)sin(a£/)(l + zz) d d2 x= ~ [cos2 (aU)- a2 zz sin2 (aU)] âV + âUâV + 2acosi(aÜ)sin{alf) ( d â^ \ cos2 (aU) -i2 T sT2 (nT A? V^z dz) ? a~ zz sm1 (aU)] 2a cos(aU) sin(a£/) â2 _ â 2 > ? + z- [cos2 (aU)- a2 zz sin2 (aU)]2 ^ ^z2 âz1) 2a2 cos2 (aU) sin2 (a U) ( d _ â ? + z- [cos2 (aU)-a2zz sin2 (aU)J ^ dz dz' cos2 {aXJ) + a2 zz sin2 {alf) d1 [cos2(aC/)-a2zzsin2(af/)]3 dzd* (18) We can expand the operator in powers of a, which is a small parameter f ?x=2| â2 a1 ( \dVdV dzdz; + a22U\ âdâ â2 _ â2^ ? + ^ + - + z - - + z { âV âz âz âz -2 âz2) (19) Note that the metric does not allow the first order of a parameter. In order to solve eq (19) we use a perturbative scheme. The zeroth order part, which we call L0, is the flat Minkowski space d' Alembertian function. We start with the Sturm-Liouville equation nj = A<f> (20 The explicit construction of the Green function GF uses the eigenfunction of this equation. GF can be given by G(x,T) = -Z t'(*'W) (21)Here the eigenfunctins of the Sturm-Liouville problem form a complete set. We perform the calculation to first order of a which is a2 (Z0 +a2L2+..)(0o +a2<f>2+..) = (A0+a2A2+..)(<fi0 + a2<j>2+..) (22) this gives ^2+4^0 = ^ 0^2 + ^ 2^0 (23) (24) where I0=2 â2 â2 \ âUâV âzâz) L2=2U r â â â o2 _ â2^ + - + - + z - - + z V âV âz âz âz2 âz2) (25) (26) L0 is the d' Alembertian for the Minkowski space. The zeroth order solution </) 0 and X 0 are found easily. i\Ry+JL u+hjz+zUJ^U-z) V2/“ \2 wh (27) Here XIA0=k*+k%-K. (28) kx,k2,R and K are constants defining the different modes. Note that <j) ”is a solution in Minkowski space. We can also find X2 =(^0,Z2^0) = 0 due to the particular form of the operator L2. To solve the inhomogenous equation for <f> 2, we take </>2=<j>Q\g(U,z) + h{U,z)] (29) Then the eq. (24) gives iR- dg \ik1-k2\dg Uz dU uz /.,, \2 iRU iUk. (30) (31) The solution of the eq. (28) must be in this form. g(U,z) = Ugl(z) + g2(z) (32) After this form of eq. (32) substituted in eq. (30), two new coupled differantial equations emerges. iRgx(z)- 'ikx-k2^dg2(z) _, 72 J dz = 0 (33) Xll(ikx + k2f _ İR | ikx (ikx - k2\ dgx(z) = Q 2 2 J2 { Jl ) dz (34) After a little algebra, the solution of gx and g2 can be found easily. So we can find g(U,z), x iRİik, + k2), (^1+^2)2i?2 Jz(ikx + k2)2 kxR -J2{ikx+k2y 2(kf+k22)2 + 2(k?+k22)2 -4“(tf+*j) 42iR(ikx + k2) Ax 42iR{ikx + k2 ) z + A (35) With the similiar ways, we can find h{U,z).So </>2 can be constructed easily from the eq. (21). Note that working in continuum basis, the series could be transformed to integration. Here is the first order Green function for eq.
