Özet
IV ÖZET Bu tez bilim ile modern dünya arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Özellikle, modern dünyanın oluşumunda bilimin önemli bir rolü olduğunu göstermeye çalışmıştır. Whitehead, modern dünya fikrinin oluşumunda çok önemli olan filozoflardan birisidir. Fizik bilimi, mantık, matematik ve bilim metodolojisi konularında oldukça derinleşmiş bir düşünürdür. Pozitivist bilim anlayışına tutarlı olarak eleştiri geliştirenlerin başında yer almıştır. Whitehead pozitivist bilimin insani değerleri yok ettiğini göstererek, eleştirileri sonucu ortaya çıkacak felsefenin ne tür özellikleri olması gerektiği üzerinde durmuştur. Whitehead' in karşı çıktığı bilim değil mekanik anlayıştır. Modern hayatın da benzer bir anlayış üzerine kurulduğunu düşünmektedir. Bunun yerine insani anlayışın hakim olduğu bir dünyayı tercih etmektedir.

Ill ABSTRACT This thesis aims to investigate the relationship between science and the modern world. It particularly tries to show that science played an important role in the construction of the modern world. Whitehead is one of the philosophers who played a crucial role in the construction of an idea of the modern world. He is one of those who had considerable grasp of science in general, mathematics, logic and the world. He is one of the pioneers who brought strong and consistent critisizms toward positivist science approach. Whitehead examplified best the possibility that positivist science destroys the values of humans and tried to show the characteristics of philosophy to come about as a result of these critisizms. What Whitehead opposes is not the science itself but its mechanical understanding. He tend to think that modern life is built on a similar misunderstanding. He prefers a world where humanist understandings should prevail.
