Özet
Children's folklore constitutes one of the main branches in the field of folkloristics. Children's folklore is composed of two major constituents, being adults' creations, and children's own creative productions within their own cultures. While the former is an embodiment of rituals, customs, beliefs, ceremonies; the latter pertains to children's language, games, practices and ceremonies. These productions are molded and handed down orally. This dissertation is a close monographic study of children's games played by Turkish children between 1923-1996. It is a known fact that the games played by children in all over the world display common technical charecteristics. Nevertheless, children's games are anonymous creations embodying various archaic and contemporary motifs as well as elements and meanings diverging from culture to culture. First of all, the elements which lead to differences in children's games should be mentioned. These elements are of vital importance to scholars who are investigating socio- cultural structures or events. The aim of this study is to analyse Turkish children's games in relation to their structure, context, performance and functions. The framework used in this study is a culmination of previously employed structural, functional, contextual and communicative methods. In the introduction, a detailed analyses of the collections and the investigations published in Türkiye and in other countries appertaining children's games are given as well as the definitions for concepts of game and children's games. On the other hand, having studied the classification methods for children's games a new cataloguing system is proposed. In the first section of the dissertation, children's games in Türkiye are analysed structurally and fundamental characteristics - name of game, player, toy, playground, season of game, duration, play role, play formula, rules, play action, penalty and prize - are defined. Moreover, the complex relationships between the structural elements and their functions in the games are clarified. In this dissertation, it is concluded that, contextual study of Turkish children's games are closely linked with the physical environment - climate, plants, animals, geological features, etc.- historical -politicians, wars etc.- socio-cultural structure - customs, beliefs, rituals, celebrations etc.- and technological developments such as cinema, television, computer that influenced the creations of the children's games. These mentioned features are amply examplified. In third part of the first section, taking children's games as a socio-cultural indicator, the creations and variations of the genre are studied through game, player viewer relationship. Moreover, it is propounded that every game is constructed with a beginning formula, epigenesis actions and an ending formula. Furthermore, it is suggested that the main body of those productions are combinations of verbal formulae and epigenetic actions. In the final part of the first section, relationships between the functions of children's games and other fields of study - pedagogy, psychology, folkloristics, social history, anthropology etc.- are given. In the second section of this dissertation, the proposed cataloguing system is put into practice. Via the proposed system, children's games collected from Turkish children are classified alphabetically, chronologically and numerically. Moreover, it can be stated that new children's games can easily be added in this catalogue. The proposed catalogue which contains 284 main games and 1677 variants display the limits in the Turkish children's game tradition as far as main games are concerned.
