The oud has been one of the most important instruments in almost every period of the Eastern musical tradition. In the works describing the theory of music from the ninth to the eighteenth centuries, it is seen that the instrument is used as a means to convey the musical pitch to the reader. Although, the instrument called oud that is pear-shaped, with a short neck, and backward pegbox has always existed in this music, there have been many changes on the instrument, from the number of strings to the number of sound holes and even their size over the centuries. The acquaintance of Turks with the instrument can be traced back to the seventh century. As regards the Ottoman Era, the palace records give us an idea about the importance of the instrument in musical life. However, in the eighteenth century, it is in evidence that the instrument left its importance to TANBUR. From this exact period, which coincided with the beginning of the Westernization movements and a new identity seek until the nineteenth century, the oud that had not been preferred in music, re-emerged in the cultural environment of the Post-Tanzimat reform era. The re-introduction of the instrument into our musical life has been associated with the cultural exchange developed between Istanbul-Cairo through of the Khedive of Egypt. It is assumed that this cultural exchange has presented a type of 7 course strings oud which we have known existed in Egypt at the beginning of the nineteenth century which was a reminiscent of the European lute. On the other hand, the ouds produced in Istanbul after this period influenced the shape of the ouds in other geographies and formed the instrument form that comes to mind when we mention the oud today.
