ABSTRACT INELASTIC SPECTRAL ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS UNDER SEISMIC EXCITATION DÎCLELİ, Murat M.S. in Civil Engineering Supervisor: Assoc. Prof.Dr Halûk Sucuoğlu November, 1989, 122 pages The presented study consists of two parts. In the first part, inelastic dynamic spectral response of single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems to seismic excitation is investigated. The effect of various parameters, such as strain hardening ratio, damping ratio, ductility, type of base excitation and its peak acceleration, on the inelastic response is studied. A general expression for the inelastic response spectra is derived: In the second part, the derived spectra are used to determine the seismic design forces in multi-degree of freedom (MDOF) systems. A new method which is called modal ductilities method (MDM) is developed to obtain the modal ductility ratios of MDOF systems. The developed inelastic response spectra and the MDM are used together in the -n i-spectral analyses of a low rise reinforced concrete moment resisting plane frame and a medium rise plane frame with shear wall. These frames are also analysed by following the procedure defined in the Uniform Building Code (UBC). The results are assessed by comparing with the results of time history analysis (THA) carried out for the two plane structures. It is observed that the internal forces obtained by the MDM are sufficiently close to that of the THA whereas the internal forces obtained throughout UBC procedure are significantly smaller than those from THA.
