This dissertation investigates the Kadro movement (1932-1934) in Turkey with special reference to its anti-Westernism. The first two research questions that are addressed here are, namely what“the Kadroists”were saying, and second, how their utterances compare with their contemporaries'. The methodology I employ focuses upon the language and linguistic evidence in order to avoid the shortcomings of“the influence-model”as an approach to intellectual history. As a result of applying this methodology, I argue that the movement's anti-Westernism was radical for its time. Specific chapters are devoted to illuminating how this radical character distinguishes the movement from their contemporaries and other anti-Western movements alike, both in Turkey and elsewhere. In an attempt to locate Kadroist anti-Westernism in the long-term, I conclude that our current understanding of anti-Westernism suffers from being too unitary. Hence, I propose a new categorization which I have defined as“the plurality of anti-Westernisms.”
