This Master's Thesis aims to analyse the promotion of renewable energy sources by the member states of the European Union on the one hand, and the state aid rules which regulates such promotion mechanisms on the other hand. In order to become familiar with the rules which restrict the Member States to support undertakings in the renewable energy production, the cardinal rule of state aid law, which is the Article 107 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) and its relation with renewable energy is examined. Later, information on the roles of the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union, and the European Parliament as being the primary institutions of the European Union, which have the authority to regulate and enforce such rules in order to protect competition in the internal market is provided. Afterwards, three important judgements that concluded by the Court of Justice of the European Union regarding the promotion of renewable energy from the point of state aid rules are reviewed. Finally, the legislation and the policies of the European Union on the promotion of renewable energy sources are explained and the conclusion of the thesis is presented
