Özet
Bu çalışmanın amacı John Fowles'un Fransız Teğmenin Kadını ve Mantissa romanlarındaki postmodern unsurları göstermektir. Bu yüzden, postmodern poetika çalışmada önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Ancak, bütün düşünsel ve edebi akımlar kendilerinden önceki akımlarla bağlantılı olarak doğduklarından, postmodernizmden önce modernizm incelenmiştir. Postmodernizmin en geniş tanımı, varolan bütün kavram ve kurumları sorunsal olarak gören akımdır. Postmodernizm, insan yapısı bütün tanımlan sorunsal olarak görür. Dolayısıyla Fransız Teğmen' in incelenmesinde anahtar kavram sorunsallaştırma olarak ele alınmıştır. Fowles, romanda Viktorya Çağı'na ait, az bilinen bilgiler sunarak ve insanların kafalarındaki genel resmin dışında bir resim çizerek, tarih kavramını sorunsallaştırır. Benzer bir yaklaşımla, geleneksel roman kuramının tutarlılık, bütünlük, anlatıcı ve yazar gibi unsurlarını sorunsallaştırır. Dördüncü bölüm, çalışma kapsamındaki ikinci roman, Mantissa ile ilgilidir. Yine sorunsallaşma izleği takip edilmiştir ama bu kez sorunsallaştırılan geleneksel edebiyat değil de, postmodernizm ve yapısalcılık sonrası eleştiri anlayışıdır. Sonuç bölümünde ise genel bir değerlendirilme yapılmış ve postmodernizmin erdeminden bahsedilmiştir. Postmodernizmin erdemi, kendine eleştirel bakabilmesi ve kendini kutsallaştırmamalarında gizlidir. Postmodernizm, insan yapısı olan her şey gibi, kendini de sorunsallaştırabilir. Fowles'un Mantissa' daki tutumu bunun göstergesidir. II!

The aim of this study is to illustrate the postmodern elements in two of John Fowles's novels: The French Lieutenant's Woman and Mantissa. For this reason the poetics of postmodernism takes an important place in the study. However, since all philisophical and literary movements emerge and exist in relation with the previous ones, modernism is discussed prior to postmodernism. In short, the first and the second chapters of discuss modernism and postmodernism respectively. The most embracing definition of postmodernism is“the philisophical and artistic movement that considers all the surviving concepts and institutions problematic.”Postmodernism aims to problematize all the man-made definitions. Consequently, the key word in discussing The French Lieutenant's Woman is problematization. Fowles problematizes the institution of history by displaying a different Victorian Age in the novel. By presenting facts that are contrary to well-known characteristics of the era, he problematizes the stereotyped ideas. He uses a similar approach to literature and undermines various concepts related to traditional literature such as unity, narrator and the author. In the fourth chapter, Mantissa is also discussed and analyzed in line with problematization. Fowles problematizes the postmodern literary theory in the novel through the protagonist's obsession with writing a postmodern novel. Conclusion is devoted to the wisdom of postmodernism. The wisdom of postmodernism is that it never mystifies itself. Since postmodern theory is man-made, it is consider itself problematic. Fowles' Mantissa is an embodiment of the self-critical attitude of postmodernism. 110
