This paper focuses on the role of Turkish state in internationalization processes of companies operating in Turkey. This research aims to clarify the role that states (nation states) plays and political instruments that states utilize for intervening the internationalization of companies. In order to identify the role of state, historical background of state influence in Turkish economics is analysed, political instruments including the customs related policies, privatization programs, encouraging incentives, infrastructure investments, regulations to attract FDIs, and also foreign and monetary policies have investigated. The findings reveal that the role of states have not been diminishing but transforming. State is not an engine of the economy but a kind of steering wheel that is able to direct the private sector according to the needs of the country. This research has indicated that the role, dominance, and influence of the state in the economy should not be ignored and underestimated.
