Özet (Çeviri)

In most cases, anxiety disorders are one of the most widely occurring mental disorders which can affect up to 33.7% of adults over their lifespan (Kessler, Petukhova, Sampson, Zaslavsky, & Wittchen, 2012). Right now, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has been regarded as the most recommended therapy despite the fact that empirical evidence shows that CBT is not successful for all anxiety patients (Barlow, Gorman, Shear, & Woods, 2000; Brown & Barlow, 1995; Craske, 2003). This result has led to curiosity about the implementation of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as a supplement method to CBT (Hayes, Strosahl, & Wilson, 1999). The current review aims to contrast the experience of CBT and ACT in anxiety disorders in adults by combining prior studies and research to ascertain their performance in three areas: rates of recovery, reducing symptoms and quality of life. Four electronic databases were used in conducting this search: Embase PubMed, PsycArticles and PsycExtra which were used by inputting relevant search terms and then extracting data designated by the selection criteria. The quality of the studies was measured by using the EPHPP tool and discoveries were presented by narrative synthesis. Altogether, ten quantitative studies with randomised controlled trials were reviewed and, commonly, participants were being administered CBT as an intervention and ACT as a comparison. The results showed that although both ACT and CBT were found to be effective in treating anxiety disorders in general, the effect sizes of both therapeutic approaches were almost the same during short-term checkups but varied from each other in the long-term regarding quality of life, recovery and symptom reduction. This indicated that both CBT and ACT were more effective in differing areas when used in the long term. Thus, it was not feasible to find the most effective therapy in the long-term since neither of the treatments displayed empirical evidence of increasing success in the three key areas at the same time. Therefore, for further exploration this review suggests and advises a more in-depth inquiry on the long-term consequences of CBT and ACT on anxiety disorders.
