Just like individuals, large groups can also shift into regression when they face with an external crisis, or a conflict. When large groups are in regression, they look for leaders who can restore confidence to the large group by bolstering their large group identity and separating the large group from others. A destructive narcissistic leader can shift the large group from regression to malignant narcissism, in which the members of the large group share a belief that inferior others are contaminating their large group identity. However, with the advancements in the communication technologies, and the excessive use of the social media, social movements in 21st century do not need a leader in order to unite, mobilize, or expand their groups. With this background, this thesis investigated the role of the social media in large group behaviors by asking the question: Does the social media allow large groups to enhance malignant large group narcissism without needing a leader? To find an answer, thematic analysis was used on the online forum site Stormfront, which is a far-right, Neo-Nazi website. Threads and the posts on the Stormfront were analyzed in accordance with Vamık Volkan's description of destructive transforming leader's propaganda machine. The results of the analysis indicates that the members of the Stormfront was successfully enhancing their Malignant Large Group Narcissism by completing the steps in destructive leader's propaganda machine without the presence of a destructive narcissistic leader. Outcome of this thesis can help researchers to focus on the large groups themselves rather than studying the personality organizations of the leaders who can influence them.
