Present study investigates the effect of Map-width Enhancement Device (MWE) on the stability of a high pressure ratio centrifugal compressor. Different MWE designs are simulated in NUMECA Fine/Turbo to identify the relevant key design parameters. Postprocessing is conducted by CFView and MATLAB codes, which are developed in-house from scratch. A comprehensive survey of flow field alteration devices is provided regarding stability and efficiency. As a result of the present study, MWE is shown to be positively differentiating from other flow field alteration devices by enhancing both stage surge and impeller choke limits. Impeller is shown to be the critical component concerning part load stability, whereas diffuser is critical for full load. Span-wise distributions of impeller and diffuser blade incidence are investigated to predict and analyze the effect of MWE on different components and at different rotational speeds. Moreover, impeller and MWE are investigated in detail by specific analyses and flow field visualization. As a result, upstream shifting of axial slit position of the datum axial slit position and counter-swirl introducing vane placement inside the downstream channel of MWE are found to improve stability and hence map-width. Limitations are stated as impeller choke limit deterioration in case of upstream shifting and considerable efficiency loss in addition to the part load deterioration in case of vane placement. Manufacturing limitation concerning vane thickness is also taken into account and manufacturable design alternatives are proposed, which perform either better or the same as already developed designs. As a result, axial slit position (L) and vane design (Soutlet and other design parameters) are found to be the relevant key parameters concerning map-width and stability. In the end, it is a matter of map-width and efficiency compromise. The relevant parameters should be tuned considering both the stated parameter limitations and manufacturing limitations for either a target map-width or a target efficiency.
