Small businesses provide valuable research opportunities as they generate domestic employment and experience economic shocks strongly. This paper focuses on the NFIB Optimism Index which reflects the small business owners' expectations of the economy and has an explanatory power towards the real GDP growth. The research question asks if there is a better way of formulating the Optimism Index. As alternatives for the Equal Weight Index, Factor Weight Index and R-Squared Weight Index methods are compared through regression and factor analysis. The result suggests that instead of complicating the already existing Equal Weight Index method, it is better to improve the indicator calculations and fix the missing uncertainty element in the survey answers.
