Özet
The past decades were affected by the highest level of piracy. Consequently, the“United Convention of the Law of the Sea”(UNCLOS) and the“Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against Maritime Navigation”(SUA Convention) were adopted and implemented by countries to regulate the maritime environment. This thesis aims at analysing the implementation of antipiracy Conventions in the“Gulf of Guinea”(GoG) and at resolving the question of the exclusiveness of maritime Conventions to suppress piracy in the GoG. For these reasons, the Malacca Straits and Somalia piracies will be used as backdrop of implementation of piracy Conventions to ease the understanding of the context. Furthermore, the observation made brings to light a strong intervention from international and regional cooperation on affected zones. However, the GoG hasn't received the same assistance from the International Community (IC). In addition, GoG countries utilized regional collaboration to counter piracy. Nevertheless, the development of GoG states is tinted by lack of political will, corruption, financial issues, and absence of training personnel inter alia factors enhancing both piracy and boosting the problem of implementation of maritime Conventions. Qualitative and quantitative data, as well as primary and secondary sources, were analysed using thematic content analysis and descriptive statistics respectively. The study recognized the importance of implementation of maritime Conventions in the maritime industry requires the involvement of affected countries, the intervention of neighbouring countries, and the IC such as the European Union (EU), United Nations (UN), etc.
