Özet (Çeviri)

Multisensory integration is a process where the brain selectively integrates redundant information from different sensory channels in order to better understand the external environment. To infer a common cause from various sources, the brain needs to correlate the signals from different modalities in time as well as in space. Therefore, detection of synchrony, lag, and the correlation across senses is essential. In this study, we use a new model for multisensory integration (the Multisensory Correlation Detection (MCD) model) which detects and integrates redundant information from vision and audition. In previous studies, the predictive power of this model was demonstrated when simple stimuli were used, such as clicks and flashes, while parametrically varying the time lag between the two modalities. However, our daily lives have much more complex stimuli, such as speech or any audio-visual event imaginable. To learn more about the underlying mechanisms, investigation of these real-life events is crucial. For this purpose, we presented real-life audio-visual events to human subjects (a person uttering four different syllables for each video, a hand hitting guitar strings, a hammer hitting a piece of wood, etc.) and manipulated the time between the two modalities. Participants were asked to perform temporal order judgement, simultaneity judgement and two alternative forced choice simultaneity tasks with the given natural stimuli. In the current study, we modified the MCD model where unimodal signals are first processed using a change detector (response to timestamps) and then fed into the correlation detector. Results showed that the MCD model could closely replicate the empirical results for its first test with ecological stimuli, thus demonstrating its predictive power of human behaviour in a variety of psychophysical experiments, even with realistic stimuli.
