Consuming an artificially sweetened drink with a meal compared to a sugary drink was found to be more beneficial, because individuals did not compensate in calories after consuming an artificially sweetened drink. However, in many studies participants did not know which drink they were consuming. We examined whether conscious processing of a drink label can influence how much food individuals consume in a following meal. We gave participants an artificially sweetened drink either with a“low calorie”or a“high calorie”label and measured how much food they consumed in a test meal, compared to what they consumed after drinking water. Our general linear model analyses showed that individuals limit their food consumption when they were given a drink with a low calorie label. Furthermore, individuals with low disinhibition levels reduced their food intake after receiving a low calorie label but participants with high disinhibition levels did not. Future studies could investigate whether a low calorie drink label activates a healthy eater identity and drives individuals to reduce their food intake.
