Özet

54 SUMMARY In our study, we aimed to investigate systemic effects of corticosteroids on the temporomandibular and hip joints. We carried out our study at the Center of Experimental Medicine of the Medical Faculty of the Istanbul University, at the Department of Histology and Embryology of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Istanbul University and again at the Department of Histology and Embryology of the Istanbul Medical Faculty of the Istanbul University. In our study we employed totally 32 male Wistar Albino adult rats (4 months, 250 ± 30 gr) The rats were divided into two main groups. 1. Group: The rats were injected for a two week period (16 rats in total; 8 experimental, 8 control rats) 2. Group: The rats were injected for a five week period (16 rats in total; 8 experimental, 8 control rats) In our study we administered methylprednisolone (Prednol-L, Mustafa Nevzat, Istanbul) to the experimental rats for systemic injections. In the experimental groups; intraperitonally injections of methylprednisolone were administered daily to the rats at a dosage of 1 mg/kg body weight for periods of two or five55 weeks. The control rats were administered physiologic saline solution daily with at the same dosage as the steroids. The rats were then killed at the end of the second and fifth weeks. Samples were prepared at amounts of 0.5, 3 nm and 1000 angstrom after the left and right joints were excised. All the specimens were examined with light and electron microscopy. The histologic evaluations were focused on disc, condylar articular cartilage of the temporomandibular joint and head of femur of the hip joint. These evaluations were compared for both experimental and control groups and also between experimental groups. According to these evaluations, there were no significant morphologic structural and cellular changes As a result of; it is considered that systemic corticosteroids may induce chronic changes on the joints depending on dosage, period and if there were preexisting predisposing factors.
