Özet

Bu çalışma, George Eliot'ın on dokuzuncu yüzyılın edebiyat sahnesindeki etkisini incelemeyi ve onun edebi üretkenliğinin o dönemdeki sosyal, politik ve ekonomik durumlarda neden olduğu değişikliklerin önemini göstermeyi amaçlar. Ayrıca Eliot'ın yazıları, Viktorya döneminin sosyal durumunu değiştirmekte önemli bir rolü vardır çünkü Eliot toplumun gidişatının şekillenmesindeki finansal durumların rolü, kadınlara yapılan baskı ve halka yapılan zulüm gibi oldukça önemli konulara hitap etmişti. Aslında George Eliot o dönem ile ilgili tamamen yeni bir üslup ortaya koyar ve onun bu güçlü etkisi, onun gerçekçilik akımını kullanımıyla kanıtlanmıştır. Zira Eliot on dokuzuncu yüzyılın edebiyat sahnesindeki bu çığır açan akımın öncülerinden biri olarak kabul edilmiştir. Buna ek olarak, bu çalışma; medeniyetin keskin tasviri, insan doğasının zayıf yönlerine odaklanma ve işçilerin maruz kaldığı zorlukları resmetmek gibi Gerçekçiliğin en temel özelliklerini bünyesinde barındıran ve Eliot'ın en önemli eserleri arasında sayılan Middlemarch ve Adam Bede adlı eserlere odaklanmıştır. Eliot, toplumun dokusunu değiştirmede büyük bir etkisi olan teknoloji ve bilim gibi birçok alanda muazzam gelişmeler meydana gelen bir çağda yaşadı. Buna rağmen Eliot toplumun ikiyüzlü tarafını vurgulayarak bu sürekli değişime katılmış ve halkın dikkatini ve farkındalığını onları çevreleyen önemli konulara yöneltmiştir.

This study attempts to explore the influence of George Eliot in the literary scene of the 19th century and the significance of her literary production in changing the social, political, and economic situation in that epoch. In addition, Eliot's writing plays a significant part in altering the social situation of the Victorian era since she addressed an extremely vital subject such as the role of the financial aspect in shaping the course of society, the oppression of females, and the persecution of the public. In fact, this study offers a novel explanation that was completely new for that age; her substantial influence will be illustrated using realism, as she was considered one of the pioneers of originating this groundbreaking movement in the literary scheme of the 19th century. What is more, this study takes into account her literary production Middlemarch and Adam Bede that were regarded as one of the most refined literary productions that embodied the most rudimentary feature of realism, such as the accurate depiction of civilization, stressing on falling aspects of human nature, and illustrating the difficulties that faced the average workers. Eliot lived in an era known for its massive development in numerous fields such as technology and science that caused its huge impact in changing society's fabric. However, she participates in this ongoing alteration by highlighting the truthful deception of the society and brings awareness of the public to the significant issue of their surroundings.
