ABSTRACT A STUDY ON FORCED FLUSHING OF A MARINA WITH MORNING-GLORY SPILLWAY Başaran, Ahmet Serhat M. Sc, Department of Civil Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Erdal Özhan February 1997, 90 pages Marina water in the surface layer has greater potential for pollution being in direct contact with the users. Thus, the periodical removal of the water in the surface layer can contribute significantly as a remedial measure against pollution. The contribution of a structure similar to the Morning-Glory spillway to forced flushing of a hypothetical marina is investigated by use of model studies. On the physical model, velocity profiles at some selected locations are measured, and the circulation patterns are recorded by releasing floats at the marina entrance. Data recorded in the physical model study is fed into the three-dimensional mathematical model as boundary conditions. The circulation pattern is obtained in the mathematical model by simulating the motion of particles released at the entrance. Tests were mcarried out for five different locations of the Morning-Glory intake inside the marina basin. Results obtained from the physical and numerical studies are compared. Physical model results supported the numerical model. Removal of the water in the surface layer with a Morning-Glory was observed to be an effective way of forced flushing of a marina.
