SUMMARY OPERATING IN PARALLEL WITH A POWER NETWORK This study examines small impacts and their effects on the synchronous machines. Theoretical studies is given in chapter 1, chapter 2 and chapter 3. A power system is designed and its mathematical calculations during a load impact are done in chapter 4. Also in chapter 4 the power system's simulation is done using EMTP simulation software. Load impacts are delivered to the synchronous machines according to their locations of the impacts and their inertia constants. In power system physical state of generators can be effected by the power and current oscillations. Transient forces can cause damages on generator mechanics. For instants any movement on the machine couplings can make important changes on the vibration of the machine. Later these vibrations can cause the machine to be down. From the view point of generator life continuation it is important to investigate the effect of load impacts on synchronous machines. Typical examples of small disturbances are a small change in the scheduled generation of one which results in its rotor angle 6, or a small load added to the network. In general, the response of a power system to load impacts is oscillatory. If the oscillations are damped, so that after sufficient time elapsed the deviation or the change in the state of the system due to the small impact is small, the system is stable. If on the other hand the oscillations grow in magnitude or are sustained indefinitely, the system is unstable. The motion equation of a synchronous machine connected to an infinite bus is; XII<*Rdt* m ' The electrical power output of a machine in an n-machine system is, n,2 M Finally, for Pei, pM =E *# (tyos^-Gjrinö^ ffA For a given initial condition sinö~ and cos8..o are known, and the term in above parantheses is a constant. Thus we write, ^,a=E^5 sij i/'A Xlllwhere dP.. p a1 m~d6 VI ^EfiiByCosb^-G^smb^ »* It's the change in the electrical power of machnine i due to a change in the angle between machines i and /, with all other angles held constant. It is a synchronizing power coefficient nodes i and j. Since the sudden change in load PLL creates an unbalance between generation and load, an oscillatory transient results before the system settles to a new steady state condition. The instant immediately following the impact is of interest. In particular, we would like to determine exactly how much of the impact PLA is supplied by each generator PiA, i=\,2,...,n. At the instant t=0+ we know that 8iA=0 for all generators because of rotor inertias. For an impact occured at node k, we can compute, 6*/a=6*a-ö^a=6*a(0+) P^oi-PA^oi yo>Ep^w(oı 7=1 Comparing the aboue two equations at t=0+ we note that node k, ^a(0+)=“E^a(0+) i=l XIVNote also that Pkik = -PL^, so we can write the above equations in terms of the load impact as, ^a(0> *VEVm(o+) J-i J i=l,2,...,n It is interesting that at the instant of the load impact the source of the energy supplied by the generators is the energy stored in their magnetic fields and is distributed according to the synchronizing power coefficients between i and k. Thus, the machines electrically close to the point of impact will pick up the greater share of the load regardless of their size. We now estimate the system behaviour during the load period 0<t<t where t is the time at which gowernor action begins. Looking at the system as a whole, there will be an overall deceleration of the machines during this period. To obtain the mean deceleration, let us define an ”inernal center“ that has angle 6 and angular velocity w, where by defination, 5^(1/2^)26.^ wa(1/SHj)Eo)^ From the swing equation for all values of i, we compute, - S^(^o>jA)=P,A = -PiA(0+) <aR at xvd w» ”j-- =-PM(0+)/S2F. at wR i=ı This equation gives the mean accelaration of all the machines in the system. We now investigate the way in which the impact PLA will be shared by the various machines. Each machine follows an oscillatory motion governed by its swing aquation. Synchronizing forces tend to pull them toward the mean system retardation, and after the initial transient decays, dwiJdt will be the same as dwjdt. Using the swing equation at t=t^>tQ and substituting the value da.Jdt in it. Thus at the end of a brifef transient the various machines will share the increase in load as a function only of their inertia constants. We note that immediately after the impact PLL (i.e, at t=0+) the machines share the impact according to their electrical proximity to the point of impact as expressed by the synchronizing power coefficients. After a brief transient period the same machines share the same impact according to entirely different criteria, according to their inertias. xvi
