Özet
Platon, Menon diyaloğunda, şu soruyu sorar: Bilgi niçin doğru inançtan daha değerlidir? Çağdaş değer problemi, Platon'un bu sorusunu konu edinir. Değer sorusu, literatürde genellikle iki farklı şekilde yorumlanmaktadır: (1) Bilgi niçin epistemik olmayan bakımdan (i.e. pratikte) doğru inançtan daha değerlidir? ve (2) bilgi niçin epistemik bakımdan doğru inançtan daha değerlidir? Çoğu bilgi kuramcısına göre, Platon (1) ile ilgilenmektedir; fakat asıl yanıtlanması gereken soru (2)'dir. Bununla birlikte, genellikle değer sorusunun yanıtının bilginin doğasında aranması gerektiği düşünülmektedir. Bu tezin iki temel amacı vardır. Birincisi, değer probleminin ne olduğunu açıklığa kavuşturmaya çalışmaktır. İkincisi ise, bu probleme yönelik üç önemli çözüm girişiminin— güvenilircilik, erdem epistemolojisi ve revizyonizm— başarısız olduğunu iddia ederek, bilginin şanstan muaf olma özelliğinden ötürü üstün bir değere sahip olduğunu savunmaktır.

In the Meno, Plato asks the following question: Why is knowledge more valuable than true belief? The contemporary value problem is concerned with Plato's question. The value question is commonly interpreted in two different ways in the literature: (1) Why is knowledge more non-epistemically valuable (i.e. practically) than true belief? and (2) why is knowledge more epistemically valuable than true belief? According to many epistemologists, Plato is interested in (1), but the main question to be answered is (2). Morever, it is generally thought that the answer to the value question is to be found in the nature of knowledge. This dissertation has two main aims: The first is to try to clarify what the value problem is. The second is to claim that three important solution attempts to this problem— reliabilism, virtue epistemology and revisionism— are not successful and to argue that knowledge has a superior value due to the feature of non-accidentality.
