ABSTRACT Pollution has been defined in many ways. In one sense, it is any activity that causes harmful effects on human's health and environment. Petroleum industry wastes are one of the major pollutants which causes environmental pollution in all parts of the world. Marine pollution as well as soil and groundwater contamination take place all over the world. In this research, we tried to explain the relationships between the parameters measured in the activated sludge pond, the wastewater coming to the activated sludge pond and the microorganisms in the activated sludge in Petkim Mağa Petrochemical Plant. The amounts of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogen and phosphorus in the wastewater coming to the activated sludge pond were found out. In addition to this, the amount of dissolved oxygen and suspended solids as well as pH, sludge volume index (SVI) and water temperature were measured. The samples taken from activated sludge were inoculated onto special media and the amounts of Pseudomonas spp., Zooglea spp., Enterobacter spp. and yeast in the medium were found out. Also, the filamentous organisms in the activated sludge were observed by microscopic study and the amounts of Vorticella spp and Aspidisca spp per milliliter were found. All the findings obtained were put into graphics and the cause and effect relationships were explained.
