This study will research a recent phenomenon: the development of translated feminist children's literature (TFCL) in 21st Century Turkey. It will focus on the issue of feminism and translation in the specific context of children's literature. In Turkish literary system, the majority of children's literature are translations of Western children's classics such as Little Red Riding Hood (1697), Cinderella (1697), Pollyanna (1913) and Snow White (1812). On the other hand, policies implemented by the government, that some might regard as gendered and conservative, become apparent in Turkish social system. Considering the great number of translations of gender-biased children's classics as well as the gendered social discourse in 21st Century Turkey, the development of TFCL manifests itself as a notable phenomenon in both contexts. This study will carry out a two phased analysis: an analysis of the feminist content in three selected texts and paratexts, and an analysis of translation policies and ideologies of relevant publishing houses and agents. Using a systemic framework (Even Zohar, 1990a; 1990b; 1997; 2002) as well as ideology-related concepts such as patronage (Lefevere, 1992a; 1992b), the study argues that the activist policies and feminist ideologies of the publishers resulted in the development of TFCL in Turkish literary system. The aim of the study is to shed light on the ideological, social and intercultural role of translation in raising gender awareness and shaping gender identities of children in Turkey. The study concludes with a discussion of the reception of the TFCL in order to interpret the success of the imported elements in the Turkish polysystem.
