The discovery of new copper deposits in Turkey would have a significant impact on the economy of the country. This study focusses on the Hanönü-Taşköprü copper field in Kastamonu, which is one of the key target exploration areas for VMS-type copper deposits. The aim was to identify the VMS type, which most clearly matches the Hanönü-Taşköprü deposits and to determine geochemical and mineralogical variations within the ore body to ascertain whether they are consistent with the horizontally zoned nature of sea-floor massive sulphide lenses, as in classic models. The research tested whether the Hanönü-Taşköprü deposit is a Besshi type VMS deposit with horizontal zoning (or shows horizontal variations in composition) consistent with ore zonation found in classic models of sea floor massive sulphide lenses. It also tested whether certain parts have been upgraded due to secondary enrichment processes leading to the formation of secondary sulphides and oxides. Samples collected during the field study were analysed using optical microscopy, X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis and Electron Microprobe Analysis (EPMA). The tectonic setting of the area is described as back-arc rifting; the depositional environment is deep marine green and black shales with basaltic (Oceanic) volcanism. The ore depositions occurred in greywackes and siltstones, and both were metamorphosed under greenschist facies. In addition to these, associated volcanic rocks with the main deposition were identified as basaltic rifts and lavas. In the light of chemical analysis, Hanönü-Taşköprü copper mineralisation is defined as a member of the Cu-Zn group. Hanönü copper ores are different from VMS Cyprus Type and VMS Kuruko Type mineralisation regarding low Zn and Pb contents. The main result of the study is that the Hanönü-Taşköprü VMS deposit can be most clearly classed as a Besshi-type VMS deposit. The geochemical and mineralogical variations within the ore body are consistent with the horizontally zoned nature of sea-floor massive sulphide lenses, as in Besshi type model. Secondary minerals such as oxides and secondary copper sulphides found in some parts of the samples may indicate supergene enrichment of the massive sulphide.
