The purpose of this study is to investigate the current status of virtual learning environments (VLEs) in further education in terms of whether they are studentcentred learning and whether they meet the demands of today's learners. The primarily focus is to develop a deeper understanding of VLEs' perception, efficiency, relevance and suitability. Thus, definitions, functions, advantages and the pedagogy of VLEs are exposed. For this research, Moodle which is an open-source learning environment was selected. The results of this case study showed that Moodle is a studentcentred environment and meets the majority of the demands of the students but it is not significantly helping learning. In addition, although many participants expressed positive perceptions about VLEs, they believe that there is no direct correlation between the VLE used and their achievement. The clearest findings of the study showed that Moodle enables students to save time, to organise learning materials and their schedules, and to interact with their teachers and peers. The researcher concludes by making several suggestions such as increasing learning participation with web 2.0 components and virtual world, to integrate VLEs into learning process effectively.
