SUMMARY There are various explanations for the way dreams occur. All of these definitions show that dreams are spiritual events which are absolutely abs tract. All the views on this subject are indefinite. Thus, it is obvious that one cannot say the last words on it. In the future, too, there will be said a lot on the way how dreams come in to being. In this thesis, I especially tried to find an answer to these questions,“Does God give the informatons in the dreams?”That means;“Are they co ming from a devine source?”And what is the source of the guidance of the prophet in dreams and what is the source of the informations the prophet may give one in dreams?" As an answer to these questions there are different points of view of different groups of people. The first group of people believe that it is true whatever informations the prophet makes in our dreams. Their proofs is that if the prophet is seen in one's dream it is actually the prophet, because no one including the De vil can appear in dreams in the shape of the prophet. Another saying is that dreams are one of the characteristics of the prophethood. This hadith also gives a holiness to the dreams. The second group think that all the hadiths about dreams are valid only for the time of the prophet. Therefore they say that these hadiths have no validity today and in the future. Accordingly, these hadiths haven't had such a function after the death of the prophet and they even dont't have such a function in our time. The third group of people think, that there aren't in fact such hadiths. Those known ones are invented by people who want to show their own vi ews as Islamic, which, do not have anything to do with Islam. Moreover, we have only one narrator claiming these as the words of 125the prophet. And this shows that these supposed hadiths are not indefi nitely truth. For example, the Muslims opposed to Muhammed's dream be fore The Uhud War and they suggested another idea. In Addition to that, whatever the source (God, the Devil, the human beings mental state) may be, we believe that the dreams come into being under the influence of man's psychological state. There is an important point which we cannot deny is that dreams have the function of giving good news and warning. We can interpret the dreams of others within the frames of the holy book Koran and the narrations of the prophet Muhammed. Thus, we can direct people to do good things. If we extend the dreams besides the sphe re they contain and suppose them as having some functions which they do not have in fact, we will cause a lot of mistakes. It is obvious that to impose things which do not have anything to do with Islam as Islamic, has a great responsibility, I think, whatever the aim may be, it's not right to do so. 126
