Ill DETERMINATION OF ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE KERBS USED IN ANKARA AND INVESTIGATION OF ALTERNATIVE CONCERETE KERBS CONSTRUCTION (M.Sc. Thesis) Ahmet İCİK GAZİ UNIVERSITY INSTITUE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY August 1996 ABSTRACT It has been observed that concrete kerb stones used in urban landscape planning in Ankara, lose their characterictics after 5-6 years from beginning of constructing by starting breaking up from surfaces, and exposing to climate and weather conditions which causes worn out and damage. In this study, determination of engineering properties of concrete kerb stones used in Ankara and alternative methods of manufacturing for concrete kerb stones have been searched. For this purpose, experiments and inspections have been carried out on concrete kerb stones which have been taken from various manufacturing firms in Ankara. Examples of damaged and worn out concrete kerb stones have been examined at the streets and boulevards of Ankara. For manufacturing of alternative kerb stones someIV experiments have been carried out on aggregate examples per Turkish Standarts and concrete kerb stones specimens have been manufactured by preparing alternative mixture and some experiments have been performed on these specimens also. As a result of this study, following points have been determined; There is no shape or dimension standardization of concrete kerb stones used in Ankara, low bending strength, very high water absorption ratio, weather conditions are not taken into consideration during manufacturing which causes damage and worn out for concrete kerb stones manufacturing aggregates should have resistance to freezing effect and wearing, granulometric compositions should comply with standart limits and high compactness value, low water-cement ratio and high strength should aimed for concrete mixture caculations, and by providing a good compression and curing atmosphere, it is possible to manufacture strong, resistant concrete kerb stones.
