Özet
Bu tezin temel argümanı çevre sorunlarının felsefi ve ahlaki boyutunu irdelemektir. Sorunun teknolojik, bilimsel ve diğer ilgili boyutları kabul edilmekle beraber, ana vurgu sorunun ahlaki boyutuna yapılmıştır. İnsanın doğayla ilgili davranışlarının ahlaki boyutu modern felsefenin eleştirel bir analizi ile gösterilmeye çalışılmıştır. Çağdaş insanın, doğaya yönelik tek yönlü, faydacı ve sömürgeci davranışının köklerine inmek için, 17. yüzyılın önde gelen şahsiyetlerinden Francis Bacon, Reno Descartes ve Isaac Newton'un fikirleri eleştirel olarak ele alınmıştır. Son tahlilde, doğanın araçsal ve faydacı bir anlayışla kullanımım ön gören tüm çağdaş ahlak kuramlarının meşruiyyetlerini bu görüşlere dayandırdığı ileri sürülmüştür. Bundan dolayı çevre ahlakı sadece ahlakla sınırlı sorular sormamakta, belki tüm varlık ve insanın varlıkla olan ilişkisiyle ilgili temel sorular da sormaktadır. Tüm çağdaş ahlak kuramları Kartezyen metafiziğin sağladığı temelVI varsayımları kendilerine temel olarak alırken, bir çevre ahlakı ileri süren kuramlar da ekoloji, yeni fizik ve organik alem anlayışının sağladığı temel varsayımları benimsemektedir. Çevre ahlakının en belirleyici ve ayırdedici varsayımı ise, evrenin bütünlüğünü, birliğini ve bağımlılığını ileri sürmesidir. Bu bütüncül ve organik evrende herşey birbirine bağlı ve bağımlıdır. Böylece Kartezyen metafiziğin dualist anlayışı ret edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak, mevcut çevre bunalımının felsefi ve ahlaki boyutu vurgulanarak, bu sorunları çözmek için ileri sürülen çözümlerin de yine felsefi ve ahlaki görüşlere; bunların da yeni bir metafizik temele dayandırılması gerektiği vurgulanmıştır. Bu bağlamda, bu tez çevre sorunlarına hazır çözümler sunmak iddiasında olmayıp, çevre soranlarının tam olarak anlaşılması ve uzun vadede çözümler bulunmasında felsefenin ve ahlakın nasıl bir katta yapabileceğini göstermeye çalışmaktadır.

This thesis analyses the philosophical and ethical dimension of environmental problems. While the technological, scientific and other relevant dimensions of the problem are acknowledged, the main emphasis is given to the ethical dimension of the issue at hand. The ethical dimensions of human attitudes towards nature are analyzed by means of a critical survey of modern philosophy. The thoughts of three leading personalities of the seventeenth century, i.e., Bacon, Descartes, and Newton, were examined and exposed so that the exploitative roots of modern man's attitude towards nature could be analyzed. It is shown that the new metaphysics of the seventeenth century laid down the foundations of legitimization and the instrumental use of nature as well as of all the utilitarian and instrumentalist trends in ethical theory. Environmental ethics, therefore, stands on a border and asks deeper questions about not only ethics as a whole, but all reality and its relation toIV human beings as well. While all modern ethical theories have relied on the assumptions provided by the Cartesian metaphysics, environmental ethical theories rely on the assumptions provided mainly by ecology, new physics and the organic world view. The underlying idea and assumption of environmental ethics is the wholeness and interdependence of the universe. Every being is connected to every being else in this holistic and organic universe. Finally it is argued that if the present environmental crisis is, on the whole, ethical and philosophical, then the solution for environmental problems should be based on ethical and philosophical considerations at the same time. Therefore, environmental ethics, should be grounded on some new metaphysical foundations. In order to handle the present environmental problems, we have to re-construct the man-nature relationship on a new metaphysical basis. This thesis, however, does not put forward tentative prescriptions to environmental issues, but rather applies a critical approach to the citation of the elements of the environmental crisis in so far as it presents an affiliation to ethics, and tries to do utmost justice to each, while treating them.
