Bu tezdeki amacım, edebiyatm değişik dönemlerindeki üç ayrı yazara ait, üç değişik oyunda komedi kavramını incelemektir. Bu çalışma komedinin tanımına bir cevap bulmaya çalışacak ve incelenen açıklamalar doğrultusunda davranışa bağlı komedya, sözcük oyunlarına bağlı komedya ve fikir komedyalarının temel işlevlerini gözler önüne serecektir. Bu tez aynı zamanda komedinin nereden kaynaklandığı, yazarların komik duygusunu nasıl sağladığı ve kullandıkları yöntemlerin neler olduğu gibi sorulara eserlerden örneklerle cevap bulmayı amaçlamaktadır.

ABSTRACT A STUDY CONCERNING THE ESSENCE OF COMIC SPIRIT IN WILLIAM CONGREVE'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD, OSCAR WILDE'S THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST AND BERNARD SHAW'S CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA. Yurdutemiz, Ebru M. A. English Literature Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Nursel İçöz. January 1996, ( 71 ) pages. My aim in this thesis is to study the comic vision in the three major works of three playwrights belonging to different periods in literature. The works to be studied are The Way of the World by William Congreve, The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde and Caesar and Cleopatra by George Bernard Shaw. This work will try to find an answer to the changing concept of comedy in time and then in the light of the considered explanations, it will present the basic functions of the comedy of manners, comedy of words and comedy of ideas. This thesis will also seek to answer questions such as where does comedy arise from, how do the playwrights convey the comic vision or spirit or what are the devices used by them to evoke the spirit, with examples from the above mentioned works.
