ABSTRACT THE IMPACT OF DISCOURSE MARKERS ON BEVELOPING READİNG SKILLS İN ENGLISH AT INTERMEDIATE LEVEL : A CASE STUDY Uçku, Çiğdem M.A., Department of Foreign Language Education Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Sabri Koç September 1996, 113 pages The primary aim of this study is to find out whether there is any effect of discourse markers on reading comprehension at intermediate leveî of English. in order to do this, two groups of subjects at intermediate and upper intermediate levels of language proficiency were formed. Furthermore, two pairs of reading comprehension tests with and vvithout discourse markers were constructed by the researcher. Each test consisted of 10 questions. The scores of the subjects obtained on each measure were compared with each other and among the groups to analyze the relationship between the discourse markers and reading comprehension. İÜResults of the study provided emprical evidence in favour of the daim that the discourse markers have considerable effect on reading comprehension at intermediate level.
