Özet
Bu çalışmanın amacı, 1940 - 1960 yılları arasında yazılan çağdaş İngiliz romanında“Pikaresk”(picaresque) kullanımları ortaya çıkarmaktır. Bu çalışma kapsamında, John Wain'in Hurry On Down; Kingsley Amis'in Lucky Jims Iris Murdoch'in Under the Net; Joyce Cary'nin Herself Surprised isimli romanları incelenmiştir. Bu tezin giriş bölümünde,“pikaresk”geleneğinin tarihçesi verilmiş, onaltıncı ve onsekizinci yüzyıllarda tspanyol ve İngiliz Edebiyatında bu geleneğe uygunluğu ile tanınan belli başlı romanlar incelenmiştir. Tezin ana bölümlerinde yukarıda adı geçen romanlar“pikaresk”roman geleneğinin özellikleri, bu tür romanların geleneksel (picaro) kahramanı, anlatım ve teknik açılarından ele alınmış, her bölümde o romanın geleneksel pikaresk anlayışı ile benzer ve farklı yönleri imcelenmiştir. Bu çalışmada ayrıca, romanlarda geleneksel“pikaro”kahramanının yanısıra, yirminci yüzyılda ortaya çıkan modern“pikaro”ve“pikara”karakterlerinin bazı yazarlar tarafından neden tercih edildiği vurgulanmıştır. Sonuç bölümünde, 1940-1960 yılları arasında dönemin bazı yazarları tarafından modern insanın içinde bulunduğu karmaşıklığı göstermek için özellikle tercih edildiği belirtilmiştir.

This study is an analysis of major picaresque novels written between the years 1940 to 1960. The purpose of this research is to find out whether the picaresque has some viable uses in that particular period of contemporary British fiction. This study will examine the uses of the picaresque mode in the most widely known picaresque novels of the periods Hurry On Down, Under the Net. Lucky Jim and Herself Surprised. The novels in this dissertation have been deliberately chosen since each of these novels presents the vision of reality from a different perspective. It is part of the aim of this research to explore to what extent these novels employ the picaresque as setting, scene, character and action for the depiction of their specific vision. The picaresque mode will be discussed in general terms before going on to discuss the novels themselves. In the introductory chapter, some outstanding social, economic and political factors which gave rise to the picaresque novels in the 18th century will be examined, and the genre will be put into the context of the British society to determine the relevance of the genre to the novels under discussion. The following chapters will be devoted to the analysis of the novels within the framework of the picaresque as a literary genre. The concluding chapter will outline the final discussion of the novels in accordance with the picaresque genre.
