The current scholarship on madness in early modern period focuses on the stage representations of madness or of Bedlam, the gendered nature of madness as well as the representations of the“inward”or mental aspect of madness taking the mind/body dichotomy as a basis. However, in this thesis, I focus on the“body of the mad”in order to explore early modern conceptualizations of madness as a historical alterity, under the light of literary and medical texts of early modern Europe that cover the period between the late fifteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Doing so, I borrow Deleuzian concepts such as“Body without Organs”and“becoming”in order to better express how madness and humoral body function in forming the perception of the human in the medicine of the period. In the examples from the early modern period –with an overarching parallelism— the body of the mad is situated outside of the realm of“human”which leads me to look for the difference between“animal”,“human”and“beast”with the aim of mapping the dynamics of“madness”,“humanness”and“nonhumanness”in the period. This thesis, by looking at medicine and literature comparatively and complementarily as well as by explicating how mental disease function in a larger scale in the culture, aims to open up new venues in medicine and literature relation for future works.
