For this study, I developed six different online protocols based on the book“The Power of Protocols”by Joseph P. McDonald, Nancy Mohr, Alan Dichter, and Elizabeth C. McDonald and National School Reform Faculty website. After developing six online protocols, I explored the potential of three protocols, which are Mars/Venus Protocol, The Charrette Protocol, and Save the Last Word for Me Protocol, in asynchronous online discussions. To determine the effectiveness of the use of online protocols within asynchronous discussion forums, I asked to instructors to implement these three protocols in real online courses and received feedback on their use from instructors. According to my literature review, there are some problems in online protocols. The purpose of developing online protocols is to overcome some of the issues faced in online discussions. Based on my literature review, these issues include non-participation, posting that does not reflect critical thinking skills, limited interactions among participants, and topic digression to unfocused talks. Some online protocols had been develop to solve these problems about online protocols.
