ABSTRACT The east-west issue in Turkey is a phenomenon appeared following the civilization and cultural changes, happened to occur in the early 18th Century and officially recognized with proclamation of Tanzimat on the 3. November 1839. This controversial and conflictive phenomenon has been one of most important corcerns of Turkey for almost two centuries and one of the subjects mostly reviewed by the Turkish authors and philophers as well. Peyami Safa studied the east-west dilemma as the basic promblematic of his intellectual pieces and novels. İn almost all of his pieces, Peyami Safa evaluated the east-west issue from a large perspective and pointed out that the west was quite important for the eastern world, as well as the east, with its civilization and culture structure, was an important concern, even a subject of comparison for the west. Peyami Safa asserted, that we had to take the evolution experienced by the west into account while making an east-west synthesis in Turkey, the westernizatin efforts based on the former patterns of western civilization was a mistake, and that this synthesis could have been only achieved through maintaining own moral values. İn Peyami Safa's pieces, the east-west issue took place generally as a moral and ideological phenomenon. Said author accomplished the application of the theoretical structure in his pieces through both the topic he selected and studied as well as the behavioral patterns of the figurative cadre he created and his perspective toward this cadre. Peyami Safa has taken place in the Turkish literature as an author studying and even investigating strikingly the western thought and the reflection thereof on the Turkish literature in the course of the foundation of the Republic of Turkey. - 215 - »aess»
