Giriş Bölümü'nde 1764 yılında Horace Walpole'un The Castle of Otranto adlı eserinin yayınlanması ile ortaya çıkan onsekizinci yüzyıl İngiliz Gotik roman türünü etkileyen edebi ve sosyal etkenler hakkında genel bilgi verilmiş, ve İngiliz Gotik roman türünün genel özellikleri açıklanmıştır. Birinci Bölüm'de roman sanatında olay örgüsü ve kişilerin rolü ve önemi vurgulanmış, ve roman yazarlarının romanları için uygun olay örgüsü ve kişileri yaratırken kullandıkları metodlar ve yöntemler tespit edilmiştir. İkinci Bölüm'de onsekizinci yüzyıl İngiliz Gotik roman türünün en iyi üç örneğinin (Horace Walpole, The Castle of Otranto; William Beckford, Vathek, M. G. The Introduction gives a general information about the background of the eighteenth-century English Gothic novel, and points out the literary and social influences on its emergence in 1764 by the publication of The Castle of Otrantoby Horace Walpole. It also gives a summary of the general features of the English Gothic novel. Part I focuses upon the importance and role of plot and character in the structure of a work of fiction, and points out the methods and devices that novelists use to create the most appropriate kind of plot and character for their novels. Part II focuses upon and comments on the plot structure of the three of the best examples of the eighteenth-century English Gothic novel (Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto, William Beckford's Vathek, and M.G. Lewis's The Monk). It analyses the methods and devices that these authors used in creating the most appropriate kind of plot for their novels. Part III focuses upon the various types of characters that Horace Walpole, William Beckford, and M.G. Lewis used to populate their novels. It analyses the methods that these characters are handled, and points out the importance and function of these characters in enabling these authors to achieve their aims. Conclusion establishes the general features of plot and character in the eighteenth-century English Gothic novel. And it analyses how the Gothic novelists handle plot and character in order to achieve their aim which is to evoke curiosity and a sense of terror while trying to convey a moral instruction.
